1/13/2017

Announcements:
  1. SPAM 1:  Rememember, your SPAM 1 deadline is next THURSDAY!  You must have your meeting and turn in the SPAM 1 form by 3:30 on that date.
  2. Original Research Folks:  You should have your interview questions or surveys close to final by the end of this week.  That means interview questions should be run by me, and survey questions should be run by me and Kyle.

Starter 8
  1. What themes are you starting to see in the research you are doing?  What threads are you finding that you plan on developing in your paper?
  2. What do you need to do further research on in the next stage of research, where you can look beyond academic journal articles to other sources (interviews, TED talks, documentaries, newspaper and magazine articles, etc.)?  What gaps in your knowledge do you need to fill?

Deep Reading Goals
  1. Finish your three intertextuality paragraphs
  2. Create your bibliography
  3. Check your work against the rubric- make sure that you will fall into the 3 or 4 columns, so you don't have to redo anything!

    1. Blank deep reading rubric
    2. ONE annotated journal article
    3. Lexicon list
    4. Reading notes OR annotation key for the annotated article
    5. Three intertextuality paragraphs
    6. MLA bibliography of all five of your sources
  5. Turn that sucker in!

HOMEWORK
Finish, print, and assemble your Deep Reading packet if you didn't finish it in class today.  DUE:  Start of class, Tuesday.  That means printed and stapled BEFORE class starts!

Deep Reading Assignment

1/4/2017

Starter 2:  Research Quote
Read the quote linked above.  As you read it, underline and highlight sentences or ideas that strike or surprise you.  When you are done reading, respond in writing to the following questions:
  1. What does this professor identify as the thing that hurts much non-fiction writing?  Do you agree or disagree with her assessment?
  2. What sentence in this piece most stood out to you?  Copy it and explain why it strikes you, and what it makes you think.
  3. Are you guilty of the bad habit she discusses in the second to last paragraph?  If not, how do you avoid this?  If you are, how could you avoid this mindset in the next few months?

Sample Paper Discussion
Get into a group of 3-4 students.  It doesn't matter which thesis you read.  Bring with you your reading notes and the thesis you read yesterday.  In your groups, discuss the following, and have one person jot down some notes for our debrief:
  1. What were the main things you noticed as you read these papers?  Make sure you address organization, writing style, use of evidence, and the sources in their bibliography!
  2. How can having this example in your head help you in your research process?
  3. What did you learn from this example that you would like to apply to your own writing?
  4. What questions do you have about the senior thesis now that you have read an example?  Write these down to ask Lori!

Deep Reading

  1. Pair/Share:  What does it mean to deeply read something?  What does this process look like?
  2. Read the Deep Reading assignment.  Annotate it with questions and concerns for Lori.
  3. Ask Lori your questions, clarify the assignment to your satisfaction.
  4. Need more clarity?  See the examples hung up at the front of the room, or watch the screencast "Deeply Reading an Academic Text" on the Senior Project page of my DP.

Academic Databases
  1. Get your library card out, or steal a library card number from another student.
  2. Go to the Senior Project page of my DP.
  3. Scroll down to the video called "Remote Access to Library Databases"
  4. Watch it, and do what it tells you!  Remember, have your library website open so you can follow along in a step by step way.

Research Goal and Time!
Time to use that database!  Your goal today is to find at least one good academic source from the library database, and print it out (feel free to use my printer for this)

HOMEWORK:
  • LIBRARY CARD
  • Find at least one good academic source from the library database, and print it out.  If you find more, AWESOME!!!

Welcome Back!  Senior Thesis, here we come!

  1. What is your biggest anticipated difficulty in working independently on your thesis?  Help each other develop potential strategies for overcoming your difficulties.

Info Dump:  Review Deadlines, Honors, Expectations, etc.
  1. Familiarize yourself with Senior Project DP Page
  2. Review Senior Project Deadlines
  3. Review Work Expectations
  4. Review Honors Expectations

Research Question Refinment
Complete the workshop linked above to refine your research question (I won't say finalize, because many of them will still morph as you continue researching...as they should!).  Show it to Lori for the final round of feedback before moving on.

Research Question Compilation
To get us started on choosing your outside Senior Project Advisor, we need a complete list of your research questions and project ideas.  Go to the google doc linked above, and follow the directions!

Sample Senior Thesis Analysis
Choose ONE of the student examples based on the discipline of your own research question.  Read it, and take some notes on what you notice about how the paper is structured, and what you notice generally about their thesis.

Senior Thesis Examples:
  • Molly Black:  Education and Standardized Testing (Ed. Philosophy)
  • Tony Williams:  Music and the Brain (Neuroscience and Music)
  • Shannon Etz:  Arts and Education (Educational Philosophy)
  • Tucker Leavitt:  Water Arc Explosions (Physics)
