Revision Day 5- Analysis Critiques

2/28/2025

DUE DATES- ON TIME
  1. SPAM 3- Form + Reflection. DUE: Wednesday 3/5, 3:30 PM. Turn in box.
  2. Thesis FINAL Draft. DUE: Sunday 3/9, MIDNIGHT. Google Classroom.

DUE DATES- LATE (-10%)
  1. Thesis Rough Draft. LAST DAY TO TURN IN: Sunday 3/2, MIDNIGHT. Google Classroom.
  2. AI Revision Plan. LAST DAY TO TURN IN: Tuesday 3/4,  Start of Class. Google Classroom.

Setup for Critiques
Go and find your partner for today. This time, if at all possible, you should be paired with someone in the same ballpark as your topic (i.e. science with science). Share your thesis (or a copy) with your partner.

Analysis Framework Returns
I told you you’d see this again… even if I am in control and can make it a self fulfilling prophecy. Remember long long ago to last week when we did an analysis framework? Good.

Peer Review with Analysis Framework
You will be following this handout with your partner. You will need a few highlighting colors.

Work Priorities- By MONDAY, you should have...
  1. Shared your draft and scheduled SPAM 3
  2. Completed the following revisions: Added evidence, Part 1, Part 2, Analysis (throughout the entire paper!), any other substantive rewriting and reorganization.
  3. Stuck on where to go next with your revisions? See the handy dandy checklist at the front of the room and on Google Classroom!

Revision Day 4- Part 2 Critiques

2/27/2025

DUE DATES- ON TIME
  1. SPAM 3- Form + Reflection. DUE: Wednesday 3/5, 3:30 PM. Turn in box.
  2. Thesis FINAL Draft. DUE: Sunday 3/9, MIDNIGHT. Google Classroom.

DUE DATES- LATE (-10%)
  1. Thesis Rough Draft. LAST DAY TO TURN IN: Sunday 3/2, MIDNIGHT. Google Classroom.
  2. AI Revision Plan. LAST DAY TO TURN IN: Tuesday 3/4,  Start of Class. Google Classroom.

Peer Critiques: Part 2
Pull up your thesis document and a blank document.
  1. Copy and paste your 2 into that new document.
  2. Share that new document with your partner you are sitting next to.

Peer Critiques for Background Information
Go and sit with your partner. With any luck, they’ll have absolutely no clue what your topic is about. This is good. You want a blank slate to see what you, the expert, are overlooking as obvious.

Your Task
Follow directions on this handout (also found on Google Classroom)

Step 1: The Read.
Read their background, make some notes. Refer to the handout for specifics here.

Step 2: The connection.
When you get to step 2, have your partner copy paste their intro section into your shared document. Then, continue to give them notes on that sheet. Again, refer to the handout for specific notes.

Step 3: The Return.
Take a gander at your partner’s notes. Then, add to this document with the next steps you need to follow as described in the handout.  SHOW LORI WHEN YOU ARE DONE.

Back to Work
You’ve got some editing to do.  Revision Priorities for today…
  1. Revise Part 2 of your thesis
  2. Turn your attention to Part 3- add evidence, expand analysis (remember what, why, connections!),
  3. Add transitions/citations
  4. Need a brain break? Go to the MLA Formatting Checklist

Revision Day 3- Work Through Comments

2/27/2025

DUE DATES- ON TIME
  1. SPAM 3- Form + Reflection. DUE: Wednesday 3/5, 3:30 PM. Turn in box.
  2. Thesis FINAL Draft. DUE: Sunday 3/9, MIDNIGHT. Google Classroom.

DUE DATES- LATE (-10%)
  1. Thesis Rough Draft. LAST DAY TO TURN IN: Sunday 3/2, MIDNIGHT. Google Classroom.
  2. AI Revision Plan. LAST DAY TO TURN IN: Tuesday 3/4,  Start of Class. Google Classroom.

For today, your main task should be working on your senior thesis revisions. I suggest the following order for revision tasks:
  1. Schedule SPAM 3 meeting and share your draft. Seriously, if you haven't done this yet, you are way behind the ball of where you should be.
  2. Revise Introduction. Use the feedback you received in critiques yesterday to polish and finalize your introduction.
  3. Revise based on AI Feedback. Use the AI feedback plan you develop to work on revisions.
  4. Stuck? Work on one or more of the following: Transitions (use those transitional phrases), Topic sentences (make a claim!), Analysis (What, why connections).

Revision Day 2- Part 1 Critiques + Revision

2/25/2025

DUE DATES- ON TIME
  1. AI Revision Plan. DUE: Tuesday 2/25,  Start of Class. Google Classroom.
  2. SPAM 3- Form + Reflection. DUE: Wednesday 3/5, 3:30 PM. Turn in box.
  3. Thesis FINAL Draft. DUE: Sunday 3/9, MIDNIGHT. Google Classroom.

DUE DATES- LATE (-10%)
  1. Thesis Rough Draft. LAST DAY TO TURN IN: Sunday 3/2, MIDNIGHT. Google Classroom.

Announcements:
  1. Share your draft with your Senior Project Advisor! Do it now, now, now!
  2. Wednesday- Off campus this week, but NOT next week.

REMINDER of AI PLAGIARISM
  1. Write, compose, and edit ALL IN ONE DOCUMENT. If you turned in a “copy” (DON’T DO THAT!!!), you will need to go back and share your original draft document with us.
  2. Do NOT ever have AI write or rewrite your sentences or paragraphs.
  3. If we see evidence or suspect plagiarism, we will look at your EDIT HISTORY and use DRAFTBACK. Evidence of large chunks of text being copy-pasted in could be grounds for a zero.
  4. Remember- we do NOT need to prove this beyond a reasonable doubt. We just need to have strong suspicions.

Starter- Thesis Statement + Research Question
On your draft, highlight your research question and thesis statement. If your most updated version of these is not in your rough draft, put them in NOW! Pass to your left. For the one you receive, in a comment on their draft, write the following.
  1. Look at their research question. In a comment, write down the different things they will need to answer to fully answer this question.
  2. Look at their thesis statement. Now, look back at their question.  Do they answer ALL the parts of their question in their thesis?  In your FIRST comment, make note of any mismatches between their thesis statement and their research question.
  3. In a SECOND comment on their thesis statement, write what you predict will be in their arguments based on their thesis statement. Make sure to address what specific claims they will need to make, what kind of evidence they will need to prove their thesis, and what potential counter-arguments there are to the argument they are trying to make (what would disprove their thesis?).

Part 1 Peer Critiques
Remind of critique norms- specific, helpful, and kind. List of critique qualities on the board.

Get with your assigned groups. Trade papers- share with your entire critique group. For each person:
  1. Everyone in the group read part 1. Person whose thesis is being discussed should TAKE NOTES.
  2. Discuss their hook-
    1. What is it?
    2. What strategy is it using to get the reader interested or establish importance of the topic?
    3. Does it effectively get the reader interested? Why/why not?
    4. How could they make it better?
  3. Answer as a group, verbally:
    1. After reading this introduction, why should we care about this topic?
    2. What would make you care more, or understand better why it is important?
    3. Is their thesis statement clear? What is it? Does it make an arguable claim?
  4. Repeat for each group member
  5. To move into independent revision time, show Lori a list of revisions you want to make to your question, thesis statement, and/or Part 1.

Work Time- Revisions
  1. Revise research question, thesis statement, Part 1
  2. Keep working on AI revisions from yesterday’s feedback
  3. Keep working on Phase 1 revisions (additions, re-organization, re-writing)- see the checklist if you need concrete tasks!

Revision Day 1- AI Feedback + Response

2/24/2025

DUE DATES- ON TIME
  1. AI Revision Plan. DUE: Tuesday 2/25,  Start of Class. Google Classroom.
  2. Thesis FINAL Draft. DUE: Sunday 3/9, MIDNIGHT. Google Classroom.

DUE DATES- LATE (-10%)
  1. Thesis Rough Draft. LAST DAY TO TURN IN: Sunday 3/2, MIDNIGHT. Google Classroom.

Announcements:
  1. Share your draft with your Senior Project Advisor! Do it now, now, now!
  2. Wednesday- Off campus this week, but NOT next week.

Rubric Analysis
  1. Read through the rubric that we will use to grade your senior thesis.
  2. For each bullet point: circle if you are confident in this as it stands right now, star if it needs revision but you are confident in your ability to do it, square if you know it needs improvement but you’re not sure how to do this.
  3. Review Thesis Revision handout, explain structure of the next few weeks, review schedule
  4. Set expectation- you will be engaging in critique EVERY DAY. You will probably also have to spend time outside of class to refine this.  I want this to be the BEST THING you have ever written. This takes time, energy, and focus!

AI Feedback
You have been given TWO forms of AI feedback on your rough draft.
  1. Type 1- Specific comments on your draft. These are connected to specific rubric categories. If you see a comment about a specific thing, assume that is an issue elsewhere as well. So if, for example, it leaves a comment about a topic sentence, take that as a tip to look at ALL your topic sentences and apply that feedback.
  2. Type 2- Holistic feedback that identifies strengths (Glow), weaknesses (Grow), and questions to guide your revisions (Wonder).

See the AI revision assignment on Google Classroom- the big sweeps of today are that you should get a sense of what needs to be revised, develop a prioritized revision plan, and start revising.

Work Time
  1. Complete the AI Revision Plan assignment
  2. Get a meeting scheduled with your Senior Project Advisor. Sooner is BETTER!

RD Day 6 - Citations and Transitions + WRITE

2/18/2025

DUE DATES- ON TIME
  1. Thesis Rough Draft. DUE: Sunday 2/23, MIDNIGHT. Google Classroom.

DUE DATES- LATE (-10%)
  1. SPAM 2. LAST DAY TO TURN IN: Tuesday, 2/18, 3:30 pm. In turn-in box. Don't forget the reflection that should be emailed to Lori!

Announcements:
  1. WEDNESDAY- Off Campus Work Day. Meet at the Durango Public Library or Smiley Building by 9:30, plan on working until 10.
  2. First Drafts are due SUNDAY at midnight. Parent emails will go out Monday morning if I don't have it turned in and complete.

Starter: Take the Yearbook Survey! Seriously, do this stuff.  Lest they let me loose on AI generators to create uncanny senior/baby photos for you.

In Text Citation Review
We’re getting into the nitty and the gritty details of writing a research paper. Unfortunately, that includes MLA in text citations.

Take a look at the handout and use the find and replace function (command+F or control+F) to find “(“ open brackets (Shift+9). This should show you any of the citations you made already and allow you to double check them. If you haven’t made these citations yet, use the same function to find “ quotation marks (Shift+’). This won’t find paraphrasing but it will find direct quotes, which is better than nothing. Not citing your sources is plagiarism.

Transition Quick Review
Quickly review strategies for transitions:
  1. Transitional phrases + logical connections
  2. Repeated words/phrases
  3. Use of last sentence + topic sentence

Transitions Practice Individually
Finally, you’re going to take some of your own writing and transition it properly.  SHOW LORI once you do this. This sheet should look eerily familiar if you can remember last semester (however long ago that may or may not have been). Once you complete this, it’s time to get back to the grind.

Work Priorities: by Wednesday at start of class I will have done:
  1. Completed a rough draft of parts 1, 2, and 75% of Part 3 of my thesis.
  2. Put transitions in through all the parts that I have written so far
  3. Checked all my In Text Citations

RD Day 5- Analysis Framework + Write

2/13/2025

DUE DATES- ON TIME
  1. Thesis Rough Draft. DUE: Sunday 2/23, MIDNIGHT. Google Classroom.

DUE DATES- LATE (-10%)
  1. Thesis Outline. LAST DAY TO TURN IN: Thursday, 2/13, MIDNIGHT. Google Classroom.
  2. SPAM 2. LAST DAY TO TURN IN: Tuesday, 2/18, 3:30 pm. In turn-in box. Don't forget the reflection that should be emailed to Lori!

Announcements:
  1. WEDNESDAY- Off Campus Work Day. Meet at the Durango Public Library or Smiley Building by 9:30, plan on working until 12.
  2. Applied for GripTape? Check your email! They are notifying people, and you will have to set up a Zoom meeting!
  3. Snow Days don’t change deadlines! If you are markedly behind where you should be (you should have your thesis halfway drafted before you come back to school next Tuesday), you should put in some hours this weekend.

Analysis Framework Assignment
People tend to struggle with analysis- let’s practice with a framework that will help you. This sheet has a framework, an example, and a place for you to practice with your own writing. Before you move into writing time, take a hard look at some section of your part 3 and use this framework to improve your writing. SHOW ME to move out of the classroom and into writing time.

Writing Goals:
By the time you come back to school next week (assuming tomorrow is, indeed, a snow day…)
  1. 50% of your thesis is drafted. This should be somewhere between 5-10 pages, but I would estimate based on how much of your outline is written.
  2. SPAM 2 form and reflection is turned in (next Tuesday is the last day to turn it in for credit).
