Mass Shooting- Research Question Revisions

10/14/2024

DUE DATES- ON TIME
  1. Mass Shootings Idea Fishing. DUE: Monday 10/14, start of class. Google Classroom.
  2. Senior Project Research Phase 2: Research Questions, Interviews and Notes, More Sources.  DUE: Wednesday 10/30, start of class. Google Classroom.

DUE DATES- LATE (-10%)

  1. Mass Shooting Charts. LAST DAY TO TURN IN: Thursday, 10/17, start of class. Google Classroom.

Picture
  1. What message is the cartoonist trying to convey through the image of Congress sitting in a boiling pot? What might the steam and the fire beneath represent?
  2. One of the figures mentions that high school students "can't even vote yet." How does this comment reflect the debate about the political power of younger generations, particularly after events like school shootings?
  3. In your opinion, how effective are student-led protests in bringing about change on issues like gun control? What might be some barriers they face despite their efforts?

Research Question Revision
Step 1: Sub Groups
You need to decide now if you want to stay in your sub-group, or if you want to move to a different sub-group. After today you will be locked in, so if you want to switch, do it now.

MOVE INTO GROUPS- should sit in these groups all week.

Step 2: Precise Research Questions
Our next step is to revise your research question to make it more precise (notice how this is similar to what you’re doing with your thesis?).  Using the same principles of last Wednesday, make your research question more precise.
  1. Make it specific- no big general terms. Ways to specify include location, age, gender, time period, etc.
  2. Should not be a question that is answerable by a yes/no/simple google search
  3. Should be relevant- you should be easily able to answer the question, “why should I care?”

Once you think you’ve got it, show it to the other members of your group, and get their feedback. Revise as needed.

Step 3: Precise Research Questions- Correlations
Now we need to identify a specific correlation that would be useful in helping you answer your research question. Remember, a correlation is trying to find a relationship between two variables.  Identify the correlation, the two variables, and why this would be useful in helping to answer your question.

Step 4: Overarching Group Question
In your group, you all need to figure out what is the overarching question that your group is trying to answer with ALL of your sub-questions. This question can be a little broader and more general than your individual questions.

Database Compilation Introduction and Work Time
For this, you will be working to compile an annotated list of resources that will be very useful in the next phase of this assignment. Again, this is somewhat similar (though shorter) than a task you will have to do for your senior thesis.

Sub Topic Idea Fishing
To mirror the senior thesis process, we will first engage in some preliminary research- this will let you see if this is really the sub topic you want to lock yourself into, or if you want to change topics next week before we start really researching.

Here’s our process for today:
  1. Get into groups with your sub-topic. If there are more than 5 of you, split into two groups.
  2. Share your question you want to research. Everyone in your group should have a different question they are looking at! Decide what each person is looking at. If you struggle with this, call your teacher over help!
  3. Start Idea Fishing for your sub-topic and question.
