Take a minute to look over the rubric for this assignment (it’s on page 4 of your packet or get a physical copy from the table). Then, answer these questions in your starter document:
  1. What category of the assignment are you most confident in at your current progress? Why?
  2. What category are you least confident about? Why?
  3. What do you need to improve today before printing this out?

Proofreading Checklist
Use this checklist. Printed copies are on the front table.

By the End of Class Today:
Have your completed Deep Reading Packet printed and handed in.

Make sure the packet is in the following order:
  1. Rubric (find this on the table by the window)
  2. Annotated article (that is the same one as the reading notes)
  3. Lexicon list
  4. Deep reading notes (based on the annotated article above)
  5. Intertextuality Paragraphs
  6. Bibliography

Turning in your Deep Reading
Dallas will be your acting printer monkey for tomorrow. Be nice to him. Bribe him with treats and shiny objects.  When you are ready to print, send him all the things in ONE DOCUMENT to print for you.  You will be turning in a hard copy packet in the following order (from top to bottom):
  1. Blank rubric (copies are on the front table)
  2. Annotated article (1)
  3. Lexicon List (at least 10)
  4. Reading Notes (for 1 article)
  5. Intertextuality Paragraphs 
  6. Bibliography (5 sources)

Done early? Proofread!
Use this checklist. Printed copies are on the front table.

  1. EMAIL YOUR SENIOR THESIS ADVISOR NOW NOW NOW (if you haven’t scheduled a meeting yet)
  2. All 5 articles read and annotated (if you are still working on this you are behind)

    1. You should have your own notes in whatever format works best for you for your other articles

Starter 28ish: Review the following Intertextuality Example and answer the following questions:
You must read Paragraph 1 and EITHER Paragraph 2 or 3- two paragraphs total.
  1. What stands out to you in the example that you want to integrate into your intertextual paragraphs? Discuss at least two different things you see here that you would like to emulate.
  2. What are themes or ideas from your research that you have seen in more than one text? How do different texts discuss them differently?

​Review Reading Notes Form and Requirements
  1. Purpose = to break down an article into its main conclusion, sub-arguments, and evidence that supports those
  2. Use the reading notes form if this is helpful
  3. You can also do these in another format, as long as it meets the goals. Check in with me TODAY if you want to do this.

By the START OF CLASS TOMORROW:
  1. Finished with reading and annotating all 5 academic sources
  2. Typed your Lexicon List (10-15 key terms for your research with definitions in your own words)
  3. Finished correctly formatted MLA Bibliography for all 5 sources
    1. Alphabetize
    2. Hanging Indent .5 for all lines after the first one
  4. Choose the source you are going to turn in for Deep Reading.  This is the source you will turn in your annotations and reading notes for.  It should be the source that is MOST FOUNDATIONAL for your research so far, which would naturally mean it has the best annotations as well.
  5. Start Reading Notes for the source you are going to turn in for this assignment.

Starter 27-  Research Quote
Read the quote linked above.  As you read it, make mental notes of sentences or ideas that strike or surprise you.  When you are done reading, respond in writing to the following questions:
  1. What does this professor identify as the thing that hurts much non-fiction writing?  Do you agree or disagree with her assessment?
  2. What sentence in this piece most stood out to you?  Copy it, and explain why it strikes you, and what it makes you think.
  3. Are you guilty of the bad habit she discusses in the second to last paragraph?  If not, how do you avoid this?  If you are, how could you avoid this mindset in the next few months?

Hi Seniors!

Welcome to your first off campus work day. Please make sure to check in with Kyle, Lori, or Jessica when you arrive at either the Smiley Cafe or the Durango Public Library at 9:30. 

Today is primarily about reading and annotating. At this point all of you should have found at least 5 academic journal articles using Elicit or Google Scholar that are relevant to your research question.


By 12:00 today, you should have...
  1. Completely read and annotated 3 of your articles.

We are available to conference and help you at any point today during our work time- come find us if you need help understanding what you're reading, or if you have questions.


Annotation Reminder
Just as a reminder, your annotations should be MORE than just highlighting or underlining. You can do them either directly on the document, or on a separate doc/piece of paper. If you are doing them separately, make sure to note the page and paragraph number, so that your annotations are helpful to find things later. Things you brainstormed that would be useful in your annotations/notes:
  1. Summaries of important ideas
  2. Marking important data/quotes you might want to use in your thesis
  3. Define important terms/vocab (this will make the lexicon list easier!)
  4. Questions
  5. Connections (to other articles, to your research question)

  1. Hallway is off limits for now- We’ve been dealing with significant class disruption and vandalism. To reset, no-one is allowed to work out of the classroom for the next two weeks. Strategies for Reading a Scholarly Article
  1. Read over the handout
  2. In your notes, list 5 things you learned about the process of reading a scholarly article 
  3. Look at one of the articles you found yesterday. 
    1. Find all the sections
    2. Are there any differences in labeling? Anything missing/added?
    3. Read the abstract, and rate this article’s usefulness on a scale of 1-4, with 4 being most useful.

Phone/Classroom Reset
Starting today, we are going to get much stricter about phones.  It’s gotten really loose in the last few weeks, and in order to engage in the deep thinking and synthesis this requires, we need phones away.  You will still be allowed to use them to set up music for work time, but if we see phones out/on/desks/in hands after the initial few minutes of setting up playlists, they will live on Lori’s/Jessica’s desk for the rest of the period. 

In addition, to work in the hallway you need to prove that you are teaching up with the daily research goals.

Starter 23
  1. What does it mean to deeply read something?
  2. When you are researching to answer a question, what is helpful to keep in your research notes?  What kinds of information do you need to include as you are putting together a complicated puzzle?

Deep Reading Assignment
Review the Deep Reading Assignment. Walk students through each part, show them examples in back of the room.

Research Strategies
  1. Create a folder in your Google drive, label it Senior Thesis Research.  Put all articles and texts here!
  2. Library Database
    1. Go to Durango Public Library
    2. Digital Resources → Online Databases
    3. Click on Academic Search Premier (top left)
    4. Enter your library card number
    5. Find an article (walk through different search options- peer reviewed, full text, etc.)
    6. Save to Google Drive, save to folder, cite
  3. Elicit (Research AI)
    1. Everyone make an account for this right now
    2. Show how to use search engine (research question, part of a research question)
    3. Click through on Semantic Scholar (sometimes has full pdfs, ALSO has related papers!)
    4. Read summaries and abstracts to see if they are applicable.
    5. Save them to your Google Drive folder!
  4. Google Scholar
    1. This searches peer reviewed academic papers
    2. Versions with a full pdf you can see in the right column
    3. Click the “cite” button under an article for perfectly cited sources!
  5. Can’t find the full text?  TWO OPTIONS…(well, 3, but one is more high effort)
    1. Step 1- Try other sources. If you found it on Elicit, try the library database or Google Scholar
    2. Step 2- Save it and go to Reed Library. If it’s not in either of those places, save the citation information, and save it for a trip to Reed Library at Fort Lewis
    3. Step 3- Academic Black Market. Email Lori the DOI and citation information (title, author, journal, date), and she will use her black market ring of professors to help find it.
  6. KEY TIP- Refine your search terms as you find the academic vocabulary you need (Ex: fashion self expression → fashion semiotics)

TODAY’S GOAL: 
  1. Find and save at least 3-5 relevant, academic sources
  2. Deep Reading Example Analysis (Due Tuesday, End of Class)
  3. Start reading one of them (if time)
