   3. Senior Thesis research starts in TWO WEEKS. Still need a question conference? Get it done soon, so you’re ready to rock and roll on Monday, 11/11.
3. Library Cards- You NEED to get some library cards in order to start thesis research next week.  Here are the two I suggest:
   1. Durango Public Library Card- Go to the library with a photo ID/proof of address
   2. Fort Lewis Reed Library- If you are over 18, go get a library card here too! You need a photo ID and proof of address.

Starter 18- Starter Self-Assessment

1. Open the rubric linked above- take a look at it.
2. Now go look at your starters (remember, you shouldn’t have anything written for 17- it was a Bridge Program survey).
3. Give your honest assessment of where you fall on the rubric, and write WHY. More than just one sentence, please!

Data that Matters Discussions
I’m going to put you in a random small group. In that group, I’d like you to discuss the following questions:

1. Go around your group, and share what topic you studied- what was your research question?
2. What are the most interesting things you discovered or learned about this as you researched?  Work to make connections between your research and knowledge here!
3. What big questions arose for you as you started to think about this research?
4. What are the implications of this research for policy?  What are some possible solutions to the issues you see here?
5. How can you connect what you and your group members found to what you’ve observed in your own life, or in what you see in the news?

Data Driven Storytelling

1. Read the handouts!  Review the assignment structure and Data Driven Storytelling.
2. Put in groups based on topic- write your group research question at the top or middle of your paper (same groups as before- move and change if necessary)

 

1. Framing: This is an exercise in complexity, patience, and problem solving.  I’ve noticed a trend of panic with open-ended things. This leads to anger, and then teachers give you what you want (a box to fit your stuff into).  For this piece, try to engage in the puzzle aspect of it- how can you tell a story? How do these pieces fit together?  Your goal today is to make a MAP of what this paper will eventually look like. 

 

1. Thesis Statements:
   1. Individually- Come up with the thesis statement that summarizes the conclusion of your data that matters assignment.  This should be ONE sentence only- ANSWER YOUR RESEARCH SUB-QUESTION.
   2. In Groups- Compare thesis statements you came up with.  Look at similarities and differences, get to one that you all think connects all of yours to answer your bigger question. 
   3. Write that thesis in the middle or top of the paper!
   4. Underneath it, write down which of the 7 types of narratives you think this is- if you think you need MORE than one type, list that/those too!
2. Individual Narratives
   1. Go back to the individual thesis you developed for your sub-question earlier. 
   2. Determine which of the 7 types of narrative you think will be MOST engaging/useful/appropriate for this particular individual argument 
3. Map These on Large Paper
   1. Large group thesis in the middle
   2. Branch others out.
   3. Use labeled arrows to draw connections between your arguments- how does one logically connect to the others?  What is the most logical sequence to introduce these?
