IF we have a snow day…deadlines for research and thesis don’t change. Make sure you stay on top of the daily goals, regardless of whether or not we are in school (again…this be like college).
You do not have to have every source for the Deep Reading assignment come from the Durango Public Library Academic Database. They just need to be ACADEMIC sources- for some of you, this may be interviews, newspapers, data tables, etc.

Starter 5: Research Quote
Read the quote linked above. As you read it, make mental notes of sentences or ideas that strike or surprise you. When you are done reading, respond in writing to the following questions:

What does this professor identify as the thing that hurts much non-fiction writing? Do you agree or disagree with her assessment?
What sentence in this piece most stood out to you? Copy it, and explain why it strikes you, and what it makes you think.
Are you guilty of the bad habit she discusses in the second to last paragraph? If not, how do you avoid this? If you are, how could you avoid this mindset in the next few months?

Finish finding 3-5 relevant academic sources
Read abstracts and conclusions to determine if they are relevant- rate each on scale of 1-4 to determine reading order
Look at an example from the back wall, focusing on ANNOTATIONS.
Choose most relevant, and begin reading and annotating

Starter 5: Independent Work Survey
Take the survey linked above! Make sure the click the "send me a copy of my results" button at the bottom of the page before you submit- we'll be coming back to these later! We'll review the results as a class, and then in pairs you'll discuss the following things:

What is your biggest anticipated difficulty in working independently on your thesis? Help each other develop potential strategies for overcoming your difficulties.
What is your biggest anticipated strength in working independently on your thesis?

Strategies for Reading a Scholarly Article

Read over the handout
In your notes, list 5 things you learned about the process of reading a scholarly article
Look at one of the articles you found yesterday.
1. Find all the sections
2. Are there any differences in labeling? Anything missing/addded?
3. Read the abstract, and rate this article’s usefulness on a scale of 1-4, with 4 being most useful.

Quick Annotation Review
Once you have found 3-5 academic articles, and saved them, you will start deeply annotating one of them (you will annotate all of them, but you will only turn in ONE). As a reminder, we are looking for in-depth annotations here- not single words or emotional reaction. Please look at the examples on the back wall at some point for what you should be aiming for!

See the assignment on Google Classroom- you will be turning this in, so please proofread! But don’t turn it in yet! You will add to it after your discussion today.

Research Strategies

Create a folder in your Google drive, label it Senior Thesis Research. Put all articles here!
Library Database
1. Go to Durango Public Library
2. Online Resources → Online Databases
3. Click on Academic Search Premier (top left)
4. Enter your library card number
5. Find an article (walk through different search options- peer reviewed, full text, etc.)
6. Save to Google Drive, save to folder, cite
Elicit (Research AI)
1. Everyone make an account for this right now
2. Show how to use search engine (research question, part of a research question)
3. Click through on Semantic Scholar (sometimes has full pdfs, ALSO has related papers!)
4. Read summaries and abstracts to see if they are applicable.
5. Save them to your Google Drive folder!
Can’t find the full text? TWO OPTIONS…(well, 3, but one is more high effort)
1. Check the library database if you found it on Elicit
2. Email Lori the DOI and citation information (title, author, journal, date), and she will use her black market ring of professors to help find it.
3. Get a library card at Reed Library on Fort Lewis campus, use their online databases. These are even more extensive than the public library.

1. Students who miss more than 20% of a class will NOT receive credit.
2. 3 unexucsed tardies = unexcused absence
3. Parents have 24 hours to excuse an absence.
4. If there are serious extenuating circumstances, that will be a conversation with teachers, students, family, and admin to make a determination. This is for things like hospitalization, a death in the family, etc. NOT family vacations, minor illness, appointments, etc.
