Storytelling With Data- Outlines

DUE DATES- ON TIME- HUMANITIES
  1. Storytelling with Data Outline. DUE: Friday, 10/27, Start of Class. In Conference.
  2. Optional- REVISED Seminar Responses (highlight and comment on revisions, please). DUE: Friday, 10/27, Start of Class. Google Classroom.  (Honors AM class- you have until Monday, 10/30).

DUE DATES- ON TIME- SENIOR PROJECT
  1. Revised Research Question + Research Part 2 (Interview Notes + 3 more sources). DUE: Wednesday, 11/1, Start of Class (9:25 AM). Google Classroom.

DUE DATES- LATE (-10%)
  1. Data That Matters. LAST DAY TO TURN IN: Tuesday, 10/31, 11:59 PM. Google Classroom.

Announcements
  1. Seminar Response Revisions- For me to regrade these, you must HIGHLIGHT and COMMENT on things you revised.  These do not need to be long comments, but they should indicate what you did in your revisions. This helps the re-grading process be more efficient.  We will not regrade resubmissions without this.
  2. Letters of Rec- I will not write you a letter until you ask me personally, and send me the required information.  If you’re on my list and have not talked to me…better do it quick.
  3. Library Cards- You NEED to get some library cards in order to start thesis research next week.  Here are the three I suggest:
    1. Denver Public Library E-Card- register online for this- it will give you access to online research databases.
    2. Durango Public Library Card- Go to the library with a photo ID/proof of address
    3. Fort Lewis Reed Library- If you are over 18, go get a library card here too! You need a photo ID and proof of address.

Starter 13
When we ask for “context” in an introduction, what do you think we are asking for?  What type of information makes sense to put in an introduction to effectively lead into your thesis?  Make a list of AT LEAST 3-5 things (more is better!)

Outline Order
When you write your outline, I suggest doing it in the following order:
  1. Confrontation
  2. Resolution
  3. Exposition

Generally, writing the argument first, then your conclusions, and finally the introduction makes the most sense.  That way you know what context you NEED to set up your argument. This holds true for your senior thesis as well.

Storytelling With Data
Goal for Today = Finish the outline that is due tomorrow morning before class.  If you finish during class, please conference with Grayson or Lori to get your outline approved, then start writing!

  1. Put your most refined and revised version of your research question, and a 1 sentence summary of where your project is on this document
  2. This document will be used to pair you with a faculty advisor for your senior thesis.
  3. Tomorrow I will have a survey for you to communicate your preferences.

Data that Matters Discussions
I’m going to put you in a small group. In that group, I’d like you to discuss the following questions:
  1. Go around your group, and share what topic you studied (poverty and…).
  2. What are the most interesting things you discovered or learned about this as you researched?  Work to make connections between your research and knowledge here!
  3. What big questions arose for you as you started to think about this research?
  4. What are the implication of this research for policy?  What are some possible solutions to the issues you see here?
  5. How can you connect what you and your group members found to what you’ve observed in your own life, or in our observations of Durango?

Storytelling with DataPut in groups based on topic

Framing: This is an exercise in complexity, patience, and problem solving.  I’ve noticed a trend of panic with open-ended things. This leads to anger, and then teachers give you what you want (a box to fit your stuff into).  For this piece, try to engage in the puzzle aspect of it- how can you tell a story?

Thesis Statements:
Come up with the thesis statement that summarizes the conclusions of your data that matters assignment.  This should be ONE sentence only.

  1. In groups, compare thesis statements you came up with.  Look at similarities and differences, get to one that you all think is the driver of this project.
  2. Write that thesis in the middle of the butcher paper!
  3. Underneath it, write down which of the 7 types of narratives you think this is- if you think you need MORE than one type, list that/those too!

Individual Narratives

  1. Individually come up with a statement that drives your personal data narrative.  Again, this should be one sentence!
  2. Determine which of the 7 types of narrative you think will be MOST engaging/useful/appropriate for this particular individual thesis.

Map These on Butcher Paper

  1. Large group thesis in the middle
  2. Branch others out.
  3. Use labeled arrows to draw connections between your arguments- how does one logically connect to the others?  What is the most logical sequence to introduce these?
  4. Outline YOUR Segment of this: See outline assignment on Google Classroom. Outlines are due Friday at the start of class, but earlier is better! Conference with Grayson or Lori when yours is complete.

Starter 8 (10 min)
When we think about poverty, there are many sub-issues within poverty (education, family structure, welfare programs, race/ethnicity…just to name a few).  Think about this- if you could answer, “I’m interested in exploring the relationship between poverty and ________,” how would you finish that question?
  1. What issue would you be interested in exploring?  Why?  What draws you to this?
  2. What specific questions would you like to answer about this issue?
  3. What kind of data would you need to answer your question?

Desmond Small Group Discussions- Chapters 4-5 (15-20 min)
Chapter 4: How We Force the Poor to Pay More
  1. How would you explain the quote: “Money made slums because slums made money” (Desmond 64)?
    1. Use an example from the text.
  2. What is the relationship between rental pricing and costs?
    1. Why is a wealthy neighborhood less valuable than a poor one to rent to?
  3. Why can it be difficult for poorer renters to move to a better neighborhood?
    1. Cite an example from the text.
  4. What does it mean to be “underbanked?”
    1. How does this manifest for the community? For an individual?
    2. How do payday loans factor into this?
  5. How is it “extremely expensive to be poor” (Desmond 77)?
    1. Cite 3 examples from the chapter.
  6. How would you describe  the relationship between poverty and having choices?
    1. Cite at least one example from the text.

  4. How do the wealthy rely on welfare?
    1. Pick 3 examples from the text.
  5. How does psychology play a role in how we feel about taxes?
  6. How would you describe the “invisible welfare state?”

Poverty and _________ Brainstorm
Now, let’s brainstorm.  What are all the different things we could use to fill in the gap?  Brainstorm in groups here, then let’s get a master list on the board.

Group Up
Let’s get into groups of 3-4, based on your interest in a specific topic.
  1. First, talk to each other about why you chose this topic- what brings you to this?
  2. Now, let’s have each person get a little more specific- what exactly do you want to look into?
    1. Start by deciding on sub-topics
      1. EX: For the larger topic of poverty and race, perhaps each person focuses on a different race or ethnicity, OR each person could focus on a different way poverty and race could be connected.
  3.  When you think you have a good division, either by sub-topic or by question, call me over to check.

EXAMPLE- Last year, we had a group whose broad question was, “When is college worth it?” Their sub questions were:
  1. Family income and college admissions
  2. Income and college completion vs acceptance
  3. Degree type and future income
  4. College and financial success

Data that Matters
  1. Read assignment
  2. Read example
    1. What do you notice about their writing?
