Thesis Statement Workshop

1/30/2017

Announcements:
  1. Annotated Bibliography is DUE!  No need to print, just make sure it's shared with me.  It is due in the first minute of class, so make sure you've done this!
  2. LIBRARY WEDNESDAY!  Head to the library on Wednesday from 9-11:45.  Let's get those outlines knocked out!
  3. Due Date Reminder:  Just a reminder, work is due whether you are here or not.  I am always available via email.  If you think you qualify for an extraordinary exception, please email me or come talk to me.

Thesis Statement Workshop
Time to get ourselves a working thesis statement!  Please note, I do expect whatever you come up with today to morph and change as you write and think more deeply about how to synthesize your research. This is to get us started, and give you some direction in your outlining process.

Outlining
Once you have a thesis statement that has gone through the critique process (see Senior Project page for this!), you should start outlining.  My suggestion is that you start thinking about Part 3, and thinking about how you want to organize this section.  Think about major themes in your research, different arguments that are made about you topic, and start making groups.  Then move on to outlining Parts 1 and 2.
  • GOAL:  Identify major themes/arguments for Part 3 of your paper.

HOMEWORK:
Come to class tomorrow with a solid working thesis statement.  Complete goal as listed above.

Thesis Statements and Outline Overview

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
  1. LATE WORK CHANGE.  Work is due whether you are here or not.  If you are absent, you must submit the assignment digitally by the due date and time.  If there are extremely exceptional circumstances (you have had the actual flu for a week, you are in the hospital, etc.), please reach out to me to let me know and we will talk.  If you have a cold, wanted to go skiing, had work, or whatever else is causing you to miss my class, tough.

SPAM 2 Email (if you didn't do this yesterday):
  1. Step 1:  Read the EXAMPLE letter here.
  2. Step 2:  Read the SPAM 2 Guidelines here.  This is important, as it gives you the date range and focus of the meeting.
  3. Step 3:  Write and send the email to your SPA.  Follow up as needed to get your next meeting scheduled.

Thesis Statements and Outline:
  1. How to draft a thesis statement (two potential approaches)
  2. Key elements of your senior thesis
  3. Outline examples
