Annotated Bibliography- Day 6

Announcements:

Library Day on WEDNESDAY. Be there at 9:30am, plan on being released at 12:00. We will split between Smiley Cafe (on 3rd) and the Library. If you need extra work time, the Smiley Cafe is open early! Please sign up on the board for your location, and indicate if you will need a ride to or from the location.
Tutoring: If you are behind in my class (if you have not turned in your Deep Reading), I have put your name on a list of students who are recommended (required) to go to MWF tutoring at lunch until you are caught up. This is in Kat Jackson’s room, room 115. If you turn in your Deep Reading, and have your Annotated Bibliography complete with 5 sources on Tuesday at the end of class, I will remove you from this list.

Deep Reading Redos
If you received a 1 or 2 in any category, you are required to redo that category. Please see my comments on your rubric and document to see what you need to do (you can also come talk to me if you still have questions).

Redos will be due by the END OF CLASS on Friday, 2/3. You may turn in re-dos on Google Classroom or in the turn-in basket.

STARTER: Thesis Brainstorm
As of right now, how would you answer your research question?

30 sec each- Talk to your partner.
30 sec each - Get up, find another person from another table, talk it out.
3 min- Write down your answer in 1 sentence (remember, it's okay to have a mixed position, to not find what you were expecting, to have caveats!)

Starter 8: Work Habits + Annotated Bibliography Examples
Work Habits

How well did your work habits/behaviors serve you for the Deep Reading assignment? What concrete things do you want to change for this next stage of your research?

Read over 1-2 entries of at least 2 of the examples: Example 1, Example 2, Example 3, Example 4

What do you notice about their annotated bibliographies? Explain what stands out to you and why.
How do you think these might be useful when you go to outline and write your senior thesis? Explain.

Lori's Rationale about the next assignment!
This is actually a really key piece- it requires you to engage and interact with your sources at a deeper level, and it's something that former seniors have found hugely helpful once they enter into the writing process. If you do this well, you should have some pieces of analysis and evidence that you can pop right into your thesis when you are drafting. This is also a task that is key to academic research, and is likely something you are going to have to do at some point in college- I've talked to a number of alumni who have had to do this in college. As far as the number of sources, the more research you do, the more you know. Remember-- the goal of a writing assignment is the RESEARCH, not the actual writing. The downfall of much non-fiction writing is not having done enough research.

Annotated Bibliography

Read CAREFULLY over the instructions for this assignment.
If you are confused, you have a few strategies:
1. Check out the example that's linked on the Senior Project page of my DP
2. Talk to a classmate (or a few classmates)
3. Talk to Lori
Start on this assignment.
Daily Goal for Today: Find (and print!) at least two additional sources. Remember, these must be reputable, but do NOT have to be from academic journals. If you find these quickly, start reading and annotating them! For those of you doing original research, this is where you should start using interviews as sources!
Make sure you have everything you need printed for the library tomorrow!

Intertextuality Review Slides
Look at these for a quick review on this part of the Deep Reading assignment.

Starter 7: Review the following Intertextuality Example and answer the following questions:

What stands out to you in the example that you want to integrate into your intertextual paragraphs?
What are two points/arguments from your research you feel would work well together intertextually? Why?

SPAM 1 Email

Go to the Senior Project page of my DP, and carefully read the Senior Project Advisor Letter 1 guidelines, and do what it tells you. Email your SPA following these guidelines. Not sure who they are? Check your email!
If, by some miraculous turn of events, your SPA wants to meet TODAY, you will need to print the SPAM 1 Form from the Senior Project page of my DP to have them fill out during your meeting.

By the End of Class Today:

All 5 articles read and annotated (if you are still working on this you are a little behind)
Lexicon List is typed and completed

What's been the most difficult thing about your research so far?
What connections are you starting to make across your different articles?

By the START OF CLASS TOMORROW:

Read and annotated 5 academic sources
Typed your Lexicon List (5-10 key terms for your research with definitions in your own words)
Finished correctly formatted MLA Bibliography for all 5 sources
Started your Reading Notes for the annotated source you are going to turn in for Deep Reading.

Bibliography

Review bibliography formatting (handouts are on the front table!)
Remind of strategies with library website, Semantic Scholar (for elicit). Will need to indent once you copy them into a document.

Reading Notes
Goal = show me you understand the claims the article is making, and the evidence they are using to support those claims.

Could format this yourself if you prefer, OR you can use the Reading Notes Form linked here and on Google Classroom.

One more thing…start thinking NOW about how you want to organize your research notes!
I suggest creating a document (or having a notebook, if you’re old school like that). In these notes, I would include the following things:

Source Title/Author/url (if applicable)

Main ideas
Key quotes (copy and past with page numbers)
Ideas about how it relates to other sources
Questions/problems this raises
