Legislation is being introduced in Colorado that would cut CSI charter schools' access to mill levy funding. Student Council reps are hoping you all are up for a quick letter-writing campaign to advocate for the importance of equal funding for charter schools. If it works, it would be great to give a little time to this effort in class.

If you are down to help support charter school funding, and thus Animas's ability to build a new school, I would encourage each of us to send a quick email to cathy.kipp.house@state.co.us expressing the importance of equal funding for charter schools.

Here is an example email template, or rather what Libby wrote! and here is Ethan's letter.  Feel free to use and modify/personalize either of these.

What is a mill levy? The mill levy is the assessed property tax rate used by local governments and other jurisdictions to raise revenue in order to cover annual expenses.

Starter:  Deep Reading Survey
Please take the survey linked above to give us feedback on this assignment!

Lori's Rationale about the next assignment!
This is actually a really key piece- it requires you to engage and interact with your sources at a deeper level, and it's something that former seniors have found hugely helpful once they enter into the writing process.  If you do this well, you should have some pieces of analysis and evidence that you can pop right into your thesis when you are drafting.  This is also a task that is key to academic research, and is likely something you are going to have to do at some point in college- I've talked to a number of alumni who have had to do this in college.  As far as the number of sources, the more research you do, the more you know.
Remember-- the goal of a writing assignment is the RESEARCH, not the actual writing. The downfall of  much non-fiction writing is not having done enough research.

Annotated Bibliography
  1. Read CAREFULLY over the instructions for this assignment.
  2. If you are confused, you have a few strategies:
    1. Check out the example that's linked on the Senior Project page of my DP
    2. Talk to a classmate (or a few classmates)
    3. Talk to Ashley
  3. Start on this assignment.
  4. Daily Goal for Today:  Find (and print!) at least two additional sources.  Remember, these must be reputable, but do NOT have to be from academic journals.  If you find these quickly, start reading and annotating them!

HOMEWORK
Find and print at least two additional sources.

Deep Reading- Day 5

1/17/2019

Announcements
  • Deep Reading Assignment deadline: Jan. 22nd, beginning of class, NO MATTER WHAT- Yes, even if you are absent, or if there are snow days.  Check out the examples on the back walls, and make sure it is PRINTED and ASSEMBLED before the start of class!
  • SPAM Meeting 1- Don't forget, this is due by 3:30 on Thursday, 1/24.  Teachers are busy, so contact them NOW to schedule a meeting!  Meeting forms are on the front table in my classroom, and linked on the Senior Project page of my DP.

Resilience Meeting Agenda
  • Today, and every other Thursday between now and Feb. 4th will be Resilience project work time for those who need it
  • Here is the itinerary for the event (lets ALL review it)
  • Let's go over the agenda for those who need to work on the exhibition

Starter

FRAMING: The key to productive work time is to clear your head of all the "shoulds, woulds, coulds" that you brought into the work time space with you. Focus on the one or two things that you need to accomplish in THIS time. What is reasonable that you accomplish with regards to  your research and senior project?

STARTER TASK: Set two goals for yourself today, ideally based off of the goals I listed in the starter. Try to make them as specific and concrete as possible.  Then, estimate how much time each goal/task will take.  If you are working on the resilience project, your starter should be focused on that!

EXAMPLE
  1. I will find an academic text on the effects of colonialism on Kenyan's system of education today. (15 minutes)
  2. I will read and annotate the abstract and conclusion of that source (25 minutes)
  3. Action Project: I will find and  research two non-profit organizations that do work in Sub-Saharan Africa and email their program directors about potential partnership for my action project.  (1 hour)

Deep Reading Work Time
Continue with your deep reading assignment.  Your goal today should be to get your 5th source read and annotated, and to write a draft of your Intertextuality paragraphs.

HOMEWORK
Complete all reading/annotating.  Draft intertextuality paragraphs.

Deep Reading- Day 4

1/15/2019

Announcements

REMINDER:  LIBRARY TOMORROW!
Please meet at the library at 9:00 tomorrow.  We will work there until 11:45, at which point you will be released for lunch.  I will be taking attendance, so please be there on time!

SPAM 1 Email
Go to the Senior Project page of my DP, and carefully read the Senior Project Advisor Letter 1 guidelines, and do what it tells you.  Email your SPA following these guidelines.  Not sure who they are?  Check your email!

If, by some miraculous turn of events, your SPA wants to meet TODAY, you will need to print the SPAM 1 Form from the Senior Project page of my DP to have them fill out during your meeting.

Deep Reading
Continue with your deep reading assignment.  Your goal today should be to get your 4th source read and annotated.

HOMEWORK
Read and annotate your 4th source.
