Senior POL- See below for important changes!

12/14/2015

  • Senior POL Outline and Schedule:  See this document for when you want to know what needs to go in your POL, and when you are scheduled for paneling and presenting.
  • POL CHANGES!  SEE THE LIST BELOW!
    • Presentation should be 4-5 minutes, rather than 5-7.  This is to facilitate more discussion time for the panel.
    • DO NOT ADDRESS:  How has your education this Fall and over the past three years set you up to be successful in your senior project?
    • It is now OPTIONAL to talk about how your project has evolved over the past three months.
    • Make sure that you have really concrete milestones for the project (don't worry about the paper here- I'll set your deadlines for that), WITH DATES. Break it down for us into all the steps you'll need to do.
    • If you would like to bring supporting documentation (list of contacts you've gotten in touch with, calendar with milestones/deadlines, budget, other?) please feel free to bring paper copies for the panel.
    • The schedule and presentation outline linked above are completely updated, so you can reference it without fear.

Model Senate Reflection and DP

12/9/2015

Model Senate DebriefCircle up!  Let’s talk about last night.
  1. Go around, share favorite moments from last night, or appreciate someone.
  2. Takeaways?  What did you learn?
  3. What could I do better next year?  What could we change that could make this even better?
  4. What advice would you give to next year’s students?
Reflection Time! You have a couple of options for your reflection (because lets be honest, aren’t you sick of the written reflections?)

Option 1:  Reality TV Confessional-
Go into the confessional booth by the bookshelves.  Video a 2-4 minute confessional style reflection on Model Senate.  Talk to the camera!  Here are some things you could talk about:
  1. What was your role in Model Senate?  Could you describe what you did?i.What did you like about your role?  What was hard about your role?
  2. What was your favorite moment or memory from model senate?
  3. What was hardest for you about this project?  Where do you think you could have improved your performance?
  4. How engaged were you during the actual exhibition?  Why?  What do you think contributed to your engagement or lack of engagement?
  5. What do you think about the final bill that passed out of your committee?
  6. How well did our senate process reflect what actually would have happened (content and process)?
  7. After doing this, how would you answer the question, “is congress broken”?
  8. How was your stress level during this project?  Was that stress level warranted?  Explain.
  9. If you could do this project again, what would you do differently?
  10. Other?

Option 2:  Audio Interview
Find a friend/partner.  Find a quiet place.  Use your phone to record a 2-4 minute audio interview (2-4 minutes of interview EACH).  Questions could include:
  1. What was your role in Model Senate?  Could you describe what you did?  What did you like about your role?
  10. Other?
Advice BoothI want to make a video of your advice for Model Senate for the next class to do this.  Take a minute, and think about what you think a student would really need to know.  This could be role specific, specific to a particular part of model senate (research, writing legislation, speeches, during exhibition, etc.), or just something you think they need to know.  This should be short- 10-20 seconds!  Go into the Advice Booth.  Have a friend film your short clip, then you film them.
DP Update:  DPs are due by MIDNIGHT ON SUNDAY.  I will be checking them early on Monday morning.  Have them DONE.On your DP, you need to have:
  1. A picture of the US Senate Seal
  2. A description of the project- what was it, what did we do, what did you do
  3. Your legislation
  4. Your speech
  5. Your video or audio reflection
POL Introduction!Let’s start thinking about this, because we’re going to run full steam into prepping for this tomorrow.  Let’s read over the handout and schedule, and I’ll answer any questions for you.  See the DOCS page for the POL Outline and Schedule.

HOMEWORK:  Finish your DP Updating.  DUE:  Midnight on Sunday.

DIRECTIONS TO NOBLE HALL:  Click on the link, and scroll to the second page for directions!

TIMES:  Be there (so leave yourself ample time to park and find it) at 4:50.  This should give you time to put together your placard, and grab your stuff out of the exhibition box.

If you are on my executive team (Executive, Maj/Min Leaders, Chairs, Ranking Members, Whips, Secretaries), OR you have stuff in your car, be there by 4:30 ready to unload and set up!

I am so proud of all the hard work you have done- you guys are going to kill it tonight.

Mocket Preparation, Schedule, and Speeches

12/4/2015

A Word from your teacher...So, not my kid this time.  I was up all night with food poisoning, and thought I could make it to school this morning.  This turned out NOT to be the case.  Given that you would probably prefer not to be vomited on (if this isn't the case, I don't want to hear about it), I'm staying home today.  It's a terrible day for me to be home, so please take some of my stress about this away, and do EVERYTHING on the list below.  I'll be available via email periodically throughout the day.

Speeches
  1. Finish them:  Finish and finalize your speeches
  2. Conferences:  If I did not conference with you yesterday, please email me your speech, and I will give you feedback digitally.  You will have an extension on your speech final draft until tomorrow (Saturday).
  3. Turn them in:  If I did conference with you yesterday, please share or email me your final draft speech before the end of class today.
  4. Practice:  Find a partner (or a small group).  Practice your speech at LEAST 3 times.  Time it!  Work on fluidity, volume (we will not have microphones), and emotional impact.
  5. Speech Schedule:  Here's the schedule I have so far for speakers during exhibition.  If you did not yet conference with me, you're not on here.  I'll add you as I give feedback on speeches today.

Placards:  How to Make a Placard
Make your placards- these MUST be done for Monday's portion of our exhibition.  Everyone needs one!  There is white cardstock on my desk that you should use for this.  You are welcome to use my printer.

Lobbyists and Experts- you should have two placards.  One for your senator role, and one for your lobbyist/expert role.  If you want to get all fancy with it, you could put your different roles on different sides of the triangle.

The MOCKET
  1. Print and Read both bills:  Glitter Illegalization Act and 1-800-NOTLINEBLING.  You must have these printed for Monday morning.
  2. Read over the MOCKET SCHEDULE.  Minority/Majority Leaders, Secretaries, Committee Chairs, Whips, make sure you're ready to go for all your roles!  If you have any questions, email me.

FOR MONDAY:
  1. Bring formal Exhibition dress for the afternoon.  This is the first part of our exhibition, so dress accordingly!
  2. Have placards finished, put together, and in my class.
  3. Be ready with speeches if you are scheduled to speak in the first committee session.
  4. Be ready to help me set up the Commons and my room during 1st period on Monday morning.  Exhibition sheet style.
  5. Email me this weekend if you have any questions!  You guys are going to rock this- I've really enjoyed seeing you dive deep into political strategy this week.  I can't wait to see you all in action!

Parly Pro and Docket Study

12/1/2015

Starter:  Run class using Parly Pro to get questions answered about Model Senate.  IF YOU WERE ABSENT, you need to go to the Docs page and get the Parliamentary Procedure Rules handout.

Docket Study:  Use the linked handout to annotate and coach the docket of bills we'll be tackling for model senate.  You need to make sure that you have really read and understand each bill deeply.  You will likely need to do additional research in order to effectively critique the bills.

Speech Outlining and Additional Research
Start outlining your speech, and do any additional research you need to do in order to effectively understand and critique the bill.

HOMEWORK:
Have a thesis statement and a working outline for your speech by the start of class tomorrow.
