Announcements

Wednesday Schedule- Honors meeting 1st period (our last discussion!), ALL meet in here period 2, then work time through period 4. To leave, you will need to show me your completed work from the list for that day.

Phone/Classroom Reset
Starting today, we are going to get much stricter about phones. It’s gotten really loose in the last few weeks, and in order to engage in the deep thinking and synthesis this requires, we need phones away. You will still be allowed to use them to set up music for work time, but if we see phones out/on/desks/in hands after the initial few minutes of setting up playlists, they will live on Lori’s desk for the rest of the period.

In addition, we are going to keep you in class to do research- not in the hallway. If Elliot is not in his office, we can use that space, but only if he is not using it.

When you are researching to answer a question, what is helpful to keep in your research notes? What kinds of information do you need to include as you are putting together a complicated puzzle?

Research Strategies

Create a folder in your Google drive, label it Senior Thesis Research. Put all articles and texts here!
Library Database
1. Go to Durango Public Library
2. Online Resources → Online Databases
3. Click on Academic Search Premier (top left)
4. Enter your library card number
5. Find an article (walk through different search options- peer reviewed, full text, etc.)
6. Save to Google Drive, save to folder, cite
Elicit (Research AI)
1. Everyone make an account for this right now
2. Show how to use search engine (research question, part of a research question)
3. Click through on Semantic Scholar (sometimes has full pdfs, ALSO has related papers!)
4. Read summaries and abstracts to see if they are applicable.
5. Save them to your Google Drive folder!
Google Scholar
1. This searches peer reviewed academic papers
2. Versions with a full pdf you can see in the right column
3. Click the “cite” button under an article for perfectly cited sources!
Can’t find the full text? TWO OPTIONS…(well, 3, but one is more high effort)
1. Step 1- Try other sources. If you found it on Elicit, try the library database or Google Scholar
2. Step 2- Save it and go to Reed Library. If it’s not in either of those places, save the citation information, and save it for a trip to Reed Library at Fort Lewis
3. Step 3- Academic Black Market. Email Lori the DOI and citation information (title, author, journal, date), and she will use her black market ring of professors to help find it.
KEY TIP- Refine your search terms as you find the academic vocabulary you need (Ex: fashion self expression → fashion semiotics)

Here’s how you should prioritize this gift of work time:

Frame your College Essay- See below for directions, see the example.
Turn in Missing Assignments- See the list of assignments above that can still be turned in.
Revise Low Grades and Resubmit- You can revise your Data That Matters, your Storytelling With Data.
Work on Other Classes- Done with everything you can do for Humanities? Catch up on missing work from other classes, honors reading, college class work, college applications, all the other things you have on your plate.

The purpose of this is so you can enter thesis research without a ton of stress hanging over your head- use this time productively, and let’s start clawing our way out of disillusionment.

Steps to Frame Your College Essay

Find your essay and cover sheet (if you need a new copy printed, share with Grayson and he will reprint)
Gather materials- Frame, scissors, poster board, double-sided tape, college essay and cover sheet
Unwrap frame, make sure to remove film from clear plastic
Cut a piece of black poster board in half on the long edge. MEASURE IT and draw a STRAIGHT LINE before cutting. If you struggle with scissor skills, ask someone else who can cut in a straight line.
Use double-sided scotch tape to attach your essay and cover sheet to the poster board. 1 small piece of tape in each corner of the essay and cover sheet.
Put it in the frame, and re-attach the back
Stack neatly at front of room.

Review grading for this assignment- group for intro/conclusion, then graded individually. We will be using the 12th grade writing rubric to assess this piece of writing, with a few minor modifications (to add the group intro/conclusion)
Turn in at the end of the period, even if you are missing group members’ contributions- they will then take a late penalty and turn their in separately

Proofreading and Polishing
See the proofreading handout linked above. I suggest dividing these tasks among group members. Your goal today is to make this piece of writing as polished and cohesive as possible.

Go into the shared document. Read the individual essay that is AFTER yours (so if yours is the last one, you will read the first one). Leave at least 3 comments on that essay.

One comment should be a positive comment “I liked this ___________ because _____________”
Two comments should be specific revision “You should revise __________ because ___________. To do this, you should (insert specific and helpful suggestion here).
Then, in your starter document, list your top 3 work priorities for today. BE SPECIFIC.

Work Time!

Finish all individual drafts- you are behind if your individual draft is not done already.
Do transitions between ALL paragraphs
Write collaborative intro and conclusion (we will workshop these tomorrow, and need drafts done by the start of class tomorrow)
Proofread, revise, make them more polished
