Deep Reading- Day 2

1/11/2019

Starter 4:  Verbal check ins!
Turn to the person sitting next to you.  What's the most interesting thing you've found in your research so far?  What's been the most difficult thing about your research so far?

Conferences with Lori
  1. Review research question
  2. Show me sources you have found so far
  3. Original research (interview, survey, etc.) timeline and resources
  4. Advisor discussion

Research Goal:
  1. Deeply read and annotate your SECOND source (annotations can be on the text, or in separate notes- your choice!).
  2. Complete lexicon list for SECOND source
  3. Start reading your THIRD source.

HOMEWORK
Finish reading, annotating/notetaking on your SECOND source.

Deep Reading- Day 1

1/10/2019

Starter 3: SPAM Assignments Survey
Take the survey linked above to give us some ideas about who you would like (or not like) for your Senior Project Advisor.  If you have MORE THAN ONE person you think could be a good fit, please let us know.

Done with the Survey?  Check out this Deep Reading Advice from past seniors!

Resilience Project Team Leader Meeting!
  • Let's look at the agenda and decide which students need to be at the meeting

REMINDER/ANNOUNCEMENT
You do not have to have every source for the Deep Reading assignment come from the Durango Public Library Academic Database. They just need to be ACADEMIC sources.
See the second to last page of the Deep Reading Assignment for a breakdown of academic vs. non-academic sources.

Reading Scholarly Articles

1/9/2019

Hey Seniors- I have completely lost my voice, and have a fever, so I will not be with you today.  Please head to Ashley's at the start of 3rd period for the starter and review of reading scholarly articles.  Someone please grab the copies of this and the deep reading assignment from the front table to take with you!  I will see you all tomorrow.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Want to do honors this semester?  Let me know by the end of the day today!  You can do this in person or via email.

Starter 2:  Research Quote
Read the quote linked above.  As you read it, make mental notes of sentences or ideas that strike or surprise you.  When you are done reading, respond in writing to the following questions:
  1. What does this professor identify as the thing that hurts much non-fiction writing?  Do you agree or disagree with her assessment?
  2. What sentence in this piece most stood out to you?  Copy it and explain why it strikes you, and what it makes you think.
  3. Are you guilty of the bad habit she discusses in the second to last paragraph?  If not, how do you avoid this?  If you are, how could you avoid this mindset in the next few months?

Review of Deadlines, etc.
For my own peace of mind, lets review deadlines, etc.

How to Read a Scholarly Article
Pull up ONE of the articles you found on the library database yesterday.
  1. Now, using the table on the first page of my handout, find all the sections.  Are there any differences in labeling?  Does it have all the sections noted?
Turn to the back of the handout.  Look at which sections you read, and when.  For the next few days, you're probably ONLY going to be reading the abstract and conclusions.

Deep Reading Assignment
  1. Pair/Share:  What does it mean to deeply read something?  What does this process look like?
  2. Read the Deep Reading assignment.  Annotate it with questions and concerns for Lori.
  3. Ask Lori your questions, clarify the assignment to your satisfaction.
  4. Need more clarity?  See the examples hung up at the front of the room, or watch the screencast "Deeply Reading an Academic Text" on the Senior Project page of my DP.

Start Your Research!
I suggest finding at least 2-3 articles to get you started before you start your deep reading.  So spend today using the abstract and conclusion to sift through the articles you find.

HOMEWORK
Find at LEAST one good source from an academic journal or publication.

Senior Thesis- Let the Research Begin!

1/7/2019

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
  • Get your library card!  Do it NOW!
  • Resilience Project Timeline and Exhibition

Starter 1:  Independent Work Survey
Take the survey linked above!   Make sure the click the "send me a copy of my results" button at the bottom of the page before you submit- we'll be coming back to these later!  We'll review the results as a class, and then in pairs you'll discuss the following things:
  1. What is your biggest anticipated difficulty in working independently on your thesis?  Help each other develop potential strategies for overcoming your difficulties.
  2. What is your biggest anticipated strength in working independently on your thesis?

Check in-
With your table group, check in about the current state of your research question, project, etc.  What feedback did you get from your POL?  What work have you done since then?  How are you feeling about your readiness to jump into research?

Update Research Question/Project Document
Update the document above with your post-POL research question and project.

Info Dump:  Review Deadlines, Honors, Expectations, etc.
  1. Familiarize yourself with Senior Project DP Page
  2. Review Senior Project Deadlines
  3. Review Work Expectations
  4. Review Honors Expectations- I need to know by TOMORROW if you plan on doing honors, so Jess can appropriately update your mid-year transcripts.

Using the Library Database
Follow along with Lori into the magical world of the Durango Public Library's academic database!

HOMEWORK
Find (but don't read) 3-5 potential sources that seem to be about your general topic.  Have them bookmarked in the library folder so that you can easily access them at the start of class tomorrow.
