REMINDER of AI PLAGIARISM

Write, compose, and edit ALL IN ONE DOCUMENT. If you turned in a “copy” (DON’T DO THAT!!!), you will need to go back and share your original draft document with us.
Do NOT ever have AI write or rewrite your sentences or paragraphs.
If we see evidence or suspect plagiarism, we will look at your EDIT HISTORY and use DRAFTBACK. Evidence of large chunks of text being copy-pasted in could be grounds for a zero.
Remember- we do NOT need to prove this beyond a reasonable doubt. We just need to have strong suspicions.

Starter- Thesis Statement + Research Question
On your draft, highlight your research question and thesis statement. If your most updated version of these is not in your rough draft, put them in NOW! Pass to your left. For the one you receive, in a comment on their draft, write the following.

Look at their research question. In a comment, write down the different things they will need to answer to fully answer this question.
Look at their thesis statement. Now, look back at their question. Do they answer ALL the parts of their question in their thesis? In your FIRST comment, make note of any mismatches between their thesis statement and their research question.
In a SECOND comment on their thesis statement, write what you predict will be in their arguments based on their thesis statement. Make sure to address what specific claims they will need to make, what kind of evidence they will need to prove their thesis, and what potential counter-arguments there are to the argument they are trying to make (what would disprove their thesis?).

Part 1 Peer Critiques
Remind of critique norms- specific, helpful, and kind. List of critique qualities on the board.

Get with your assigned groups. Trade papers- share with your entire critique group. For each person:

Everyone in the group read part 1. Person whose thesis is being discussed should TAKE NOTES.
Discuss their hook-
1. What is it?
2. What strategy is it using to get the reader interested or establish importance of the topic?
3. Does it effectively get the reader interested? Why/why not?
4. How could they make it better?
Answer as a group, verbally:
1. After reading this introduction, why should we care about this topic?
2. What would make you care more, or understand better why it is important?
3. Is their thesis statement clear? What is it? Does it make an arguable claim?
Repeat for each group member
To move into independent revision time, show Lori a list of revisions you want to make to your question, thesis statement, and/or Part 1.

Rubric Analysis

Read through the rubric that we will use to grade your senior thesis.
For each bullet point: circle if you are confident in this as it stands right now, star if it needs revision but you are confident in your ability to do it, square if you know it needs improvement but you’re not sure how to do this.
Review Thesis Revision handout, explain structure of the next few weeks, review schedule
Set expectation- you will be engaging in critique EVERY DAY. You will probably also have to spend time outside of class to refine this. I want this to be the BEST THING you have ever written. This takes time, energy, and focus!

AI Feedback
You have been given TWO forms of AI feedback on your rough draft.

Type 1- Specific comments on your draft. These are connected to specific rubric categories. If you see a comment about a specific thing, assume that is an issue elsewhere as well. So if, for example, it leaves a comment about a topic sentence, take that as a tip to look at ALL your topic sentences and apply that feedback.
Type 2- Holistic feedback that identifies strengths (Glow), weaknesses (Grow), and questions to guide your revisions (Wonder).

See the AI revision assignment on Google Classroom- the big sweeps of today are that you should get a sense of what needs to be revised, develop a prioritized revision plan, and start revising.

In Text Citation Review
We’re getting into the nitty and the gritty details of writing a research paper. Unfortunately, that includes MLA in text citations.

Take a look at the handout and use the find and replace function (command+F or control+F) to find “(“ open brackets (Shift+9). This should show you any of the citations you made already and allow you to double check them. If you haven’t made these citations yet, use the same function to find “ quotation marks (Shift+’). This won’t find paraphrasing but it will find direct quotes, which is better than nothing. Not citing your sources is plagiarism.

Transition Quick Review
Quickly review strategies for transitions:

Transitional phrases + logical connections
Repeated words/phrases
Use of last sentence + topic sentence

Transitions Practice Individually
Finally, you’re going to take some of your own writing and transition it properly. SHOW LORI once you do this. This sheet should look eerily familiar if you can remember last semester (however long ago that may or may not have been). Once you complete this, it’s time to get back to the grind.

Analysis Framework Assignment
People tend to struggle with analysis- let’s practice with a framework that will help you. This sheet has a framework, an example, and a place for you to practice with your own writing. Before you move into writing time, take a hard look at some section of your part 3 and use this framework to improve your writing. SHOW ME to move out of the classroom and into writing time.

Writing Goals:
By the time you come back to school next week (assuming tomorrow is, indeed, a snow day…)

50% of your thesis is drafted. This should be somewhere between 5-10 pages, but I would estimate based on how much of your outline is written.

Dig back into your outline and find 2 quotes you need to bring into your paper. If you did the outline correctly, this should be as simple as glancing down the list and picking any entry.

Write the set up for both quotes:
1. Here’s the challenge, you cannot use “the author says” in any permutation, you should NOT include the article title in the set up, AND you must use a signal phrase verb in each set up.
2. If you need ideas, check out the link below, or on Google Classroom.
3. Punctuate your set ups correctly! Use them to add context and shoehorn some more information into your thesis!

Setting up Quotes + Signal Phrases
Take a gander at this handout to be able to set up yer quotes. You need evidence, and being able to introduce it properly is going to be essential. Branch out, try to challenge yourself to set up quotes in a variety of ways.

Work Priorities: by Tuesday at start of class I will have done:

Set up a SPAM 2 meeting with my advisor or turned it in with reflection (you can handwrite reflection, or email it it to Lori)
Drafted at least 15% of Part 3 of my thesis (this is probably somewhere between 1-2 pages, depending on how long you anticipate part 3 to be!)
