Announcements
  1. HONORS- Meet in my room tomorrow during 1st period.  Have ALL the reading for Week 2 completed!  Be ready for more specific discussion questions.  TODAY IS THE LAST CHANCE TO DROP HONORS WITH NO PENALTY.
  2. Wednesdays- Period 1 is catch up/work time, or honors meeting.  Periods 2-3 are with Kyle and I. EVERYONE must be here for these hours. Period 4 is catch up/work time/office hours.

Starter 8 (10 min)
When we think about poverty, there are many sub-issues within poverty (education, family structure, welfare programs, race/ethnicity…just to name a few).  Think about this- if you could answer, “I’m interested in exploring the relationship between poverty and ________,” how would you finish that question?
  1. What issue would you be interested in exploring?  Why?  What draws you to this?
  2. What specific questions would you like to answer about this issue?  
  3. What kind of data would you need to answer your question?

Desmond Small Group Discussions- Chapters 4-5 (15-20 min)
Chapter 4: How We Force the Poor to Pay More
  1. How would you explain the quote: “Money made slums because slums made money” (Desmond 64)?
    1. Use an example from the text.
  2. What is the relationship between rental pricing and costs?
    1. Why is a wealthy neighborhood less valuable than a poor one to rent to?
  3. Why can it be difficult for poorer renters to move to a better neighborhood?
    1. Cite an example from the text.
  4. What does it mean to be “underbanked?”
    1. How does this manifest for the community? For an individual?
    2. How do payday loans factor into this?
  5. How is it “extremely expensive to be poor” (Desmond 77)?
    1. Cite 3 examples from the chapter.
  6. How would you describe  the relationship between poverty and having choices?
    1. Cite at least one example from the text.

Chapter 5: How We Rely On Welfare
  1. How would you respond to the assertion: “Just - when did everyone become so lazy?” (Desmond 82).
    1. How does Desmond respond to the statement?
    2. What data does he cite?
  2. Why was/is aid to the poor seen as a threat to capitalism?
  3. How would you describe welfare avoidance?
    1. What does it mean?
    2. Why is it a problem?
  4. How do the wealthy rely on welfare?
    1. Pick 3 examples from the text.
  5. How does psychology play a role in how we feel about taxes?
  6. How would you describe the “invisible welfare state?”​

Poverty and _________ Brainstorm
Now, let’s brainstorm.  What are all the different things we could use to fill in the gap?  Brainstorm in groups here, then let’s get a master list on the board. 

Group Up
Let’s get into groups of 3-4, based on your interest in a specific topic.  
  1. First, talk to each other about why you chose this topic- what brings you to this?
  2. Now, let’s have each person get a little more specific- what exactly do you want to look into?  
    1. Start by deciding on sub-topics 
      1. EX: For the larger topic of poverty and race, perhaps each person focuses on a different race or ethnicity, OR each person could focus on a different way poverty and race could be connected.
  3.  When you think you have a good division, either by sub-topic or by question, call me over to check.

EXAMPLE- Last year, we had a group whose broad question was, “When is college worth it?” Their sub questions were:
  1. Family income and college admissions
  2. Income and college completion vs acceptance
  3. Degree type and future income
  4. College and financial success

Data that Matters
  1. Read assignment
  2. Read example
    1. What do you notice about their writing?
    2. What do you think will be easy about this for you?
    3. What will be difficult?
  3. DUE: Start of Class, Tuesday 10/24

Goal by Start of class THURSDAY: Find and save 3 pieces of data that are relevant to your topic/question.
