Reading Scholarly Articles

1/10/2018

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Want to do honors this semester?  Let me know by the end of the day today!  You can do this in person or via email.

Starter 2:  Research Quote
Read the quote linked above.  As you read it, make mental notes of sentences or ideas that strike or surprise you.  When you are done reading, respond in writing to the following questions:
  1. What does this professor identify as the thing that hurts much non-fiction writing?  Do you agree or disagree with her assessment?
  2. What sentence in this piece most stood out to you?  Copy it and explain why it strikes you, and what it makes you think.
  3. Are you guilty of the bad habit she discusses in the second to last paragraph?  If not, how do you avoid this?  If you are, how could you avoid this mindset in the next few months?

Review of Deadlines, etc.
For my own peace of mind, lets review deadlines, etc.

How to Read a Scholarly Article
Pull up ONE of the articles you found on the library database yesterday.
  1. Now, using the table on the first page of my handout, find all the sections.  Are there any differences in labeling?  Does it have all the sections noted?
Turn to the back of the handout.  Look at which sections you read, and when.  For the next few days, you're probably ONLY going to be reading the abstract and conclusions.

Deep Reading Assignment
  1. Pair/Share:  What does it mean to deeply read something?  What does this process look like?
  2. Read the Deep Reading assignment.  Annotate it with questions and concerns for Lori.
  3. Ask Lori your questions, clarify the assignment to your satisfaction.
  4. Need more clarity?  See the examples hung up at the front of the room, or watch the screencast "Deeply Reading an Academic Text" on the Senior Project page of my DP.

Start Your Research!
I suggest finding at least 2-3 articles to get you started before you start your deep reading.  So spend today using the abstract and conclusion to sift through the articles you find.

HOMEWORK
Find at LEAST one good source from an academic journal or publication.
