Starter 1

How solidified is your project idea right now on a scale of 1-4. Rank, and explain.
1. 1 = I have no clue what I’m doing, and just want to sit in my chair and wail like a defeated koala.
2. 2 = I have a vague idea, but really I just want to sit on the ground and eat eucalyptus.
3. 3 = I have a pretty solid idea, but have some significant details to work out.
4. 4 = I know exactly what I’m going to do. My project is like the dominant tree koala.
Get into groups with people with your same ranking.
1. Share your current ideas (even if they are only the wisp of an idea)
2. Talk about what you need to accomplish this week
3. Share potential pitfalls- what would make your project not succeed?

Expectations for Wednesday: You are HERE from 9:30-12:00, unless you have made specific arrangements with Lori or Grayson to be off campus. If you are off campus, you text or email photographic evidence of where you are and what you are doing, and have something substantial to show for it on Thursday.

Starter 5- Figurative Language
After watching the video linked above, finish the following metaphors/similes by comparing the koalas to seniors in the process of researching and writing their senior thesis, OR to senior teachers teaching the senior thesis.

But for real though, as we move into our first project week next week, brainstorm on your starter document...

What are concrete things you need to get done next week to start moving towards a project? Think about skills you need to develop, people you need to talk to, organizations to connect with, specific tasks you need to do...make a preliminary list.

Starter 4- Annotated Bibliography Feedback

If you turned in your AnnBib- Look at the feedback you received from Lori or Grayson. In your starter, summarize the main revisions you need to make, and how you need to change your process to address this moving forward. Write any clarifying questions you have about the feedback.
If you DIDN’T turn in your AnnBib- Write a short paragraph that addresses the following questions:
1. Why was this not in on time?
2. What do you need to do differently moving forward so that you’re not behind this whole semester?
3. Is there anything we can do to support your research process?

Absences, Tardies, etc. Just a reminder that for the spring semester, core classes end April 12 (and senior projects begin). This means that for Humanities, you can miss 25 periods (so, 12.5 days). When you hit 26 absences, you lose credit. For math, you can hit 12, but when you hit 13 you lose credit. For electives, because they run to the end of the year, you can hit 14, and when you hit 15 you lose credit. Also remember that 3 unexcused tardies = 1 absence.
Grading for this Semester. 50% final draft thesis (yes, you will have an opportunity to revise), 30% TED Talk, 20% everything else (drafts, SPAM meeting, etc.).
PM Pod: Grayson is taking over your pod completely. Please save boos and applause until the end. He will be your primary contact point for information, assignments, and complaints about grading until further notice.

Starter 1: Work Habits + POL Reflections
Work Habits

How well did your work habits/behaviors serve you for the Deep Reading assignment? Discuss 1-2 things that worked well for you that you'd like to continue, and 1-2 things you would like to change, and how you might change these habits.

Dig out your notes from POLS last year and give them a read to refresh your memory- they are in your email!
1. What directions did you say you need to go these next few weeks?
2. You all need more sources, what type of sources do you need specifically?
  1. Academic articles?
  2. Interviews/surveys?
  3. Contrary opinion?
  4. Quantitative or qualitative data?

Example Annotated Bibliographies
Read over two of the examples: Example 1, Example 2, Example 3, Example 4

What do you notice about their annotated bibliographies? Explain what stands out to you and why.
How do you think this type of notes might be useful when you go to outline and write your senior thesis? Explain.

Our Rationale about the next assignment!
This is actually a really key piece- it requires you to engage and interact with your sources at a deeper level, and it's something that former seniors have found hugely helpful once they enter into the writing process. If you do this well, you should have some pieces of analysis and evidence that you can pop right into your thesis when you are drafting. This is also a task that is key to academic research, and is likely something you are going to have to do at some point in college- I've talked to a number of alumni who have had to do this in college. As far as the number of sources, the more research you do, the more you know. Remember-- the goal of a writing assignment is the RESEARCH, not the actual writing. The downfall of much non-fiction writing is not having done enough research.

Read CAREFULLY over the instructions for this assignment.
If you are confused, you have a few strategies:
1. Check out the example that's linked on the Senior Project page of my DP
2. Talk to a classmate (or a few classmates)
3. Talk to Lori or Grayson
Start on this assignment.
Daily Goal for Today: Find (and print!) at least two additional sources. Remember, these must be reputable, but do NOT have to be from academic journals. If you find these quickly, start reading and annotating them! For those of you doing original research, this is where you should start using interviews as sources!
