Annotated Bibliography and Elements of your Thesis

2/11/2016

TURN IN DEEP READING PACKET!
Due in the first minute of class.

Annotated Bibliography Purpose
See the Senior Project page for the full assignment handout.  We do the annotated bibliography for 3 main reasons:
  1. To expand your research into new sources and new types of sources
  2. To analyze sources with an eye towards how they'll fit together in your paper
  3. To get ready to outline and write, and to make this process easier

Possible Sources for your Annotated Bibliography:
  1. Any of the articles you used for your Deep Reading assignment
  2. Newspaper/magazine articles
  3. Books
  4. Documentaries/TV Series
  5. Interviews
  6. Survey Data
  7. Data from your own scientific experiment
  8. Websites (be careful here!  No blogs!  No crappy websites or Wikipedia!  If in doubt, ask me!)

Elements Handout
Review this handout (linked on the Senior Project page of my DP) carefully.  It gives you a roadmap for where we're eventually headed, and you can start to think about where certain sources or bits of certain sources can fit into the structure of your argument.

HOMEWORK
  • Annotated Bibliography:  5 completed sources due on Tuesday, 18, at the Start of Class.  Yes, you will need to work over your 4-day weekend.

Work Habits Check In and Deep Reading LAST DAY!

2/10/2016

Starter:
Look back at the Work Habits Survey we took about a week ago (you should have emailed the results to yourself...if you didn't, go back and look at the original survey linked above).  Look over how you answered the questions, then write about...
  1. Self Reflection:  How accurate was our initial assessment?  Are there areas where you are struggling that you didn't anticipate?  Or areas where you thought you would struggle that are easy for you?
  2. General Check In:  How is this process going for you so far?  Is there anything I could be doing that would make this process work better/be more productive?  Are there work habits you need to change?

See the Senior Project page for Week 2 Goals and Objectives!
Review this carefully- make sure you know when you need to be here, and when the optional days are.

Deep Reading Continued...
By the end of the day today, you should be DONE.  This means your Deep Reading packet is printed, put in order, and ready to turn in in the first minute of class on Thursday.

HOMEWORK:
  1. Print and organize your Deep Reading assignment to turn in (DUE Thursday, February 11, SOC)

Classroom Optional:  Deep Reading and Intertextuality, continued...

2/9/2016

See the Senior Project page for Week 2 Goals and Objectives!
Review this carefully- make sure you know when you need to be here, and when the optional days are.

Deep Reading Continued...
By the end of the day today, you should have deeply read (meaning that you have amazing annotations, lexicon, and reading notes/annotation key) at least FOUR sources.  You should also have drafted ONE of your intertextuality paragraphs.  However, if you get ahead (and bust out deep reading this weekend), I can move you to our next stage of research whenever you're done.  Getting ahead of the game is never a bad idea!

HOMEWORK:
  1. Work on Deep Reading assignment (DUE Thursday, February 11, SOC)
  2. 5 sources are found, and at least four sources deeply read (meaning that you have amazing annotations, lexicon, and reading notes/annotation key).
  3. 1 intertextuality paragraph is written
  4. Complete SPAM 1 this week.  Make sure you fill out the form completely before turning it in to Lori- remember, there's a quick reflection component you have to do on the back! (DUE Monday, February 8, by 3:15)

Announcements
  1. Fort Lewis Library Cards!  Great news- if you are over 18, you can get a free library card to the Fort Lewis Library.  This gives you access to a HUGE database (much bigger than the public library's) of journals, books, etc.  I highly recommend this to you if you are struggling to find resources, or if you are finding many articles that are not available in full text.  You need to bring your driver's license (or other state issued ID, and a piece of mail addressed to you at your current address.

Conferences
If you missed a conference with me on Wednesday or Thursday, you should probably come check in with me today!

CLASSROOM OPTIONAL!
Remember, this just means you have freedom in when and where you do the work...not freedom to not do the work.

Deep Reading
Continue working on the Deep Reading assignment.

By the end of today, you should have found 5 total sources (this could include sources you already had, if they are academic sources), and started deeply reading one of them.  Aim to get about halfway through that first source.

Struggling with annotations?
Check out the "Annotation Station" handout on the Senior Project page for some helpful tips  and possible formats for annotations.

Senior Thesis Examples and Deep Reading

2/1/2016

ABSENT LAST FRIDAY?!
  • Please see Friday's DP and make sure to get your project and artist statement mounted and hung up in my classroom.
  • Complete the SURVEY on my DP, and carefully review the Senior Project Deadlines and Expectations handout (linked on Senior Project Page of my DP).
  • Make sure your name is on your project somewhere I can see it easily.

Starter #9
  1. Read "Ink on Paper"
  2. How do you typically take notes?  Why do you prefer this method?
  3. Does this article change the way you think about taking notes in any way?
  4. Why annotate?  Why not (if you don’t)?

Class Biz
  1. Review Senior Project Deadlines and Expectations
  2. This week's schedule and benchmarks

Exemplar Critique Protocol
Open the above link, follow the instructions.  On the Senior Project page of my DP are a number of student exemplars.  Choose ONE of the student examples based on the discipline of your own research question. (If your question is more humanities-based, choose Molly's, Shannon's, or Cori's. If it is more sciency, choose Tony's or Tucker's)

Deep Reading Lesson/Assignment Overview_
  1. Pair/share:  What does it mean to deeply read something?  What does this process look like?
  2. Individually, read the "Deep Reading" assignment handout.  Annotate it with questions, concerns
  3. Ask Lori questions you have about it
  4. A note on Matt’s feedback:  Students hate this at first (and in the middle), but it’s been one of the most influential pieces in shaping their arguments, questions, and conclusions!
  5. Need more examples for how to deep read? Watch Matt Hughes' screencast, "Deeply reading an academic text" embedded on the Senior Project page on my DP.

Database Access Video
  1. Go to the Senior Project page on my DP
  2. Scroll down to the first youtube videos embedded on this page, entitled "Remote Access to Library Catalog)
  3. Watch it
  4. (THIS IS WHY YOU NEEDED YOUR LIBRARY CARD BY TODAY!)

WORK TIME: Find Sources!
  1. Aim for 3 articles from academic journals (EBSCO host) that relate to your research question.
  2. Begin reading! Get as deep into the readings as you can today.

HOMEWORK:
  1. Work on Deep Reading assignment (DUE Thursday, February 11, SOC)
  2. Find at least 3 academic sources that relate to your topic.
  3. Complete SPAM 1 this week (DUE Monday, February 8, by 3:15)
